Assignment #2 Postscript on the Societies of Control

When the society of control is combined with digitalism, huge changes are happening.

In the disciplinary society, people go from one closed environment to another closed environment and start again and again, but in the control society, people will never know anything. Because society has been transformed at any time like a universal deformer to extend its control network overwhelmingly. The program that controls society is its control mechanism. It is like the software of a very large computer in society. Whether the computer runs smoothly or not is directly related to the software it assembles. The task of the control mechanism is to determine the legal or illegal position of each person and carry out general debugging. In other words, no one’s social position is solid, and no one knows who they are or how to succeed in the turbulent social realm. Indeed, many people on the Internet have become famous overnight or have fallen into disgrace overnight, and this is not limited to celebrities. Such experiences can also occur in ordinary people. Perhaps just because of a sentence, an action or a short video, a work, the social status of someone will change dramatically.

The strict logic system that controls society is constructed through digital languages. Digital languages make our identities must be identified by digital codings, such as ID numbers, credit card numbers, and so on. This digital language permeates people’s daily lives and cannot be separated. In the history of human science and technology, no technology has brought such a broad and far-reaching impact on humankind as the advent of the digital revolution and has participated in the construction of people’s lifestyles in the most direct way. It is undeniable that modern electronic technology has brought many conveniences to people’s lives. For example, cheap and fast long-distance communication, simultaneous synchronization of global transmission, etc., these methods have directly changed the way of life and thinking of people.

After reading it, you can feel Deleuze’s anxiety about the coming of control society, because people are used to being controlled, and even the harsh imprisonment may turn into good memories. While we are enjoying the convenience, we are also in the controlled range. Most people often buy online and find that they have purchased things that they don’t need, or they will be confused about why they bought those things. In my opinion, this is an invisible control. People are unknowingly guided and take other unexpected actions. Achieving this kind of control comes largely from surveillance.

Another example is the recent crisis of infectious diseases. Behind the epidemic, many dark incidents have been exposed to the media or netizens. However, for complex reasons, many will be quickly blocked or deleted after release. The Internet is not a true freedom of speech. On the contrary, we must be more careful about what we say, because the spread of the Internet is too fast and the spread is too wide, which will have a great impact. So what to do when the voice of justice is masked, people will flip the picture or post an important picture with several unrelated pictures to avoid censorship and try to let more people know before disappearing. All in all, even if speech and behavior are being controlled, people will still actively seek out new ways to speak. Therefore, we must clearly understand what kind of society we live in.

A sentence in reading made me think for a long time, There is no need to fear or hope, but only to look for new weapons. I was wondering what these new weapons referred to here might be the source of power needed to control or maybe it is the appropriate way of life that citizens of society seek in controlling society and then open up a new kind of freedom. As for me, I lean towards the latter, and I believe to a large extent that it will become the future of controlling society
