Assignment #5 The live of others

The lives of others are watched, and eavesdroppers are also watched.

After watching the film, what impressed me is the interesting and clever visual structure of the video. The film’s name is “The Lives of Others”, which means that from the beginning, the audience, we, were also placed in the position of eavesdroppers. But different from the eavesdropper Wiesler in the film-most of the time is monitored by listening, and the audience is watching the eavesdropper and watching the life of the eavesdropper.

At first, Wiesler was rigorous and meticulous. The meticulous image of the secret police was very attractive to me. When he started to monitor Dreyman’s private life, he used wire in the monitor room to ring the doorbell of Dreyman’s house to remind Dreyman to discover the privacy of his girlfriend and minister. At this time, he had begun to intervene in the life of the monitored subject, and he no longer looked like an icy machine, while listening to the monitoring content, while recording mechanically. I realized his transformation, and I also realized the possible transformation of the movie. The movie moved me more mainly because the two men silently recorded the tacit understanding of each other in the dark, Wiesler secretly modified the monitoring content, and Dreyman finally thanked Wiesler by writing a book. I often wonder if it is me if faced with the situation, can I have the courage to oppose autocracy and authority. I can’t answer with certainty, even secretly thinking that I will choose to yield to authority. But the details of the movie and the performance of the actors made me feel that I was not untouchable to have a different choice. This is probably the biggest charm of this movie.

Therefore, the transformation of the two men (the artist into a contestant and the listener into a guardian) is where the movie touches me most. It reminded me of my high school period when the school issued a notice saying that it was forbidden to bring mobile phones into the campus. But we all know it is impossible for adolescent students not to use mobile phones. Although the students complained, nothing changed, and the monitoring of the mobile phone started. The school mainly adopts two methods. One is to randomly call the student’s phone number during the class. If the call is answered, it will be considered a violation. The other is to set up an inspection team to conduct random inspections. The first one is easier to handle, as long as you change the phone to flight mode during class, you can still watch the good videos. For the second method, students are also trained to monitor the teacher’s whereabouts in real-time. If a student sitting by the window sees a teacher going through the corridor, he will immediately remind the student who is playing on the mobile phone.

This was the atmosphere of the school at that time. School leaders were busy catching classmates with cell phones. Students secretly took cell phones and kept monitoring each other with their teachers.

I was also one of the many who stole a cell phone, and at that time something amazing happened that I wanted to come. It was a late self-study time without a teacher that day. I was sitting close to the window in the last row. It was an excellent place to observe the movement of the teacher. After finishing my homework, I looked up and saw the headteacher passing by the window, thinking that he should have gone to the toilet. I lowered my head, took out the phone from the drawer, looked at Weibo for a while, saw the QQ space, and put it in the drawer. After less than ten minutes, I thought that the late self-study was about to end, so I wanted to open the back door and let it breathe. As soon as I opened it, I saw the headteacher peeking out of the door, and then he came in and took the phone from my drawer.

Although it was a very bad ending for me, I always thought afterward that if I didn’t have the brain to open the back door at that time, I would not expose the class teacher who had been peeking, and maybe I could have escaped. From the standpoint of the headteacher, he understands that the school’s requirements for mobile phones are difficult for students to realize, When he saw me using a mobile phone, he didn’t open the back door to catch me right away. It was to give me a chance. I certainly can’t call it a “recovery of humanity”, but at that time changed my view of him. He was a meticulous and strict physics teacher before. If I hadn’t experienced it myself, I might not believe that he would give someone a second chance.

Actually I did not seize that “opportunity”, it did exist. I also very clearly remember his eyes when he opened the back door and the headteacher looked at each other — it’s unbelievable why I went to open the back door, which caused him to have to take the mobile phone as required. However, I believe the class teacher chose to give me a chance at that time. Part of the reason may be that I just watched the mobile phone for a while and did not play games or watch the video unscrupulously.
